How Safe Is Sedation Dentistry?

You have to go to the dentist, and you’re anxious. Maybe you had a bad experience as a child, maybe a dentist treated you badly, maybe an oral health issue caused you a lot of pain.

Whatever the cause, you’re so worried that you’re considering canceling your appointment — until you hear about a procedure called sedation dentistry, which uses medication to help people feel more relaxed and calm during dental visits.

But you have a question: How safe is sedation dentistry?

At Smile Design Manhattan, we understand your concerns, and we’re here to help.

How does sedation dentistry work?

We use sedation dentistry not only for anxious patients, but also for those with a low pain tolerance, a bad gag reflex, or sensitive teeth. Sedation dentistry may also benefit patients facing a longer-than-usual procedure.

Dentists use several types of medication for sedation dentistry — what you need depends on your procedure and the reason you need sedation. There are three basic types:

Inhaled sedation

You inhale nitrous oxide (commonly known as “laughing gas”) through a mask on your face. It won’t put you to sleep, and it wears off quickly.

Oral sedation

This sedation comes in the form of a pill you take an hour or so before your dental visit. It has a mild to moderate effect; arrange to have someone drive you home after oral sedation.

IV sedation

Intravenous sedation is more intense and puts you into a relaxed state quickly. You may need this type for more involved procedures, and you definitely need help getting home.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

As with any medical procedure, you can’t say there’s zero risk involved with sedation. However, these methods have all proven safe over time, and any risk is low.

We monitor your vital signs throughout the sedation period and have on hand oxygen and drugs that reverse the effects of sedation if needed.

The biggest safety check is ensuring your dentist is qualified to perform sedation — check with them during a visit before the procedure. Also, ask if the planned dosage is FDA-approved, and inform them of any other medications you’re taking so they can check for drug interactions.

At Smile Design Manhattan, we want our patients to be comfortable so they can get the oral health care they need.
